About Braes Hall The Braes Hall was formerly the Braes School. It now serves as a meeting place for all the townships from Glenvarrigall to Loch Sligachan along the Sound of Raasay. The Hall is situated in Lower Ollach, approximately half way along the B883 Braes road (see map). It lies beside mature woodland and the River Ollach, with access to the seashore. The land around the Hall is held in crofting tenure as township common grazings owned by the Braes Estate. The Village Hall adjoins a residential house which was formerly the School House. In 1978 the Braes Hall Village Club rented the hall for community use from the Highland Regional Council, first on a five year lease, then on a month to month basis until 1985 when a twenty five year lease was agreed. During the years 1983 to 1985 the Braes Hall Village Club successfully fundraised and applied for a package of grants to rescue the Hall from dereliction. Renovations were undertaken to provide toilets, a kitchen with cooking and washing up facilities, gas heaters, and a new concrete floor for half of the hall. The Hall had to be treated for woodworm, repairs were needed for rotten timbers, the windows and doors were replaced, the roof was repaired, and the electrical circuits were completely re-wired. This brought the Hall up to fire safety requirements and made the inside of the hall generally usable for most groups. More recently the management committee's aim has been to upgrade the existing facilities, and enviromentally landscape the area around the hall to create a woodland wildlife garden. There is now an excellent oakwood floor in the main hall, new double glazed windows and front door, and a tarmac kick-about area for the young people. Items that still require attention include insulation, an efficient heating system, adequate access and toilet facilities for disabled users, and landscaping of the garden area. The committee intend to provide a modern and attractive facility that can be used by existing groups, but also hope to attract and encourage new groups and clubs to use the Braes Hall. Currently the Braes Hall is used by Braes Youth Club, Braes Community Council, a Line Dancing group, and a Mother and Toddler group. There are also regular social events such as ceilidhs, parties and suppers. Crofting Township Meetings are held in the Hall, and it is used as a Polling Station when the need arises. |
