Clothes Swap Party, Saturday 4th December

Well done to Rhona & Linda who raised £300 for Chrones disease at their successful clothes swap party on Saturday 4th December.

Bingo & Soup n' Pudding

The Youth Club kicked off its series of monthly social events with a prize bingo night, preceded by soup and pudding.  Live entertainment was provided by singers Rebecca Macdonald and Eilidh Cormack, and accordionist Ceitidh Douglas. 

The event was filmed by the BBC for their programme The Great British Menu, with the theme of food that linked communities.  Chef Michael Smith from The Three Chimney's restaurant made an appearance, but was outshone in a Pavlova bake-off by local baker, Rhona Macdonald.  The programme is due to be aired in April 2011. 

Many thanks to all those who attended and supported the event.  Thanks also to Rebecca, Eilidh and Ceitidh.

A Car Boot sale raised £155 for the Red Cross Haiti Fund. Thanks to Wilma Macdonald & Mary Moir for organising the event. The Youth club raised £140 on the same day for club funds.

A Ladies Clothes swap event raised over £360 for the British Heart Foundation.  Thanks to organiser Rhona Cairns.

Youth Club Curry Night a Great Success!

The Braes Youth Club enjoyed a successful fundraising event recently, when they played host to a curry night in the Braes hall. The event was very well attended with over 70 guests turning up to support the Youth Club.  Around £150 was raised at the event for Youth Club funds.

During the evening Youth Club members served up their own variations on spiced potatoes.  Nathan Jones from Camustianavaig succeeded in winning the pudding prize, with his take on Key Lime pie.  Organiser Sir James Cryer said, “who will win it next?”

Macleans of Raasay Exhibition

An exhibition of early photos, archives and resource materials featuring the Macleans of Raasay was held in the Braes Hall on the 28th- 30th March 2007. This included a new portrait of Somhairle Maclean by Dutch artist Fred Scholey. 

 

 

BRAES BONFIRE PARTY - A Great Success!Saturday 28th Oct 2006 at the BRAES HALL

Despite the weather, we had a good turnout and the bonfire was lit by Ian 'One Match' Nicolson (thanks!) and the spectacular firworks went off BANG on time (Thanks to Bill Edgar!) We then went inside for some tasty nibbles (thanks to all who contributed, there are too many people to mention) and a refreshment or two. The kids fancy dress competition was won by Jean 'Tiger Lily'  Mackinnon; the Teenager's competition was won by Beanie 'Flapper' Finlayson and the adult prize was won by Hamish 'Oor Willie' Martin. The competitons were followed by music, dancing, and the raffle, which was superbly organised by  Roddie 'Sean Connery' McHugh.

Braes Fest, Braes Hall, 17th August 2007 

The festival was a great success and featured music from the Harris Tweed Brogues, Inflatable Haggis, Exit and Midweek Session.

A marquee was hired and erected in the Braes Hall grounds, such was the level of interest. 

The event was supported by Highland 2007.

Braes Photography Exhibition and Workshops

Children's Workshop: Braes Hall, Saturday 10th November

Led by local photographer Cailean Maclean, this workshop was aimed at children of all ages who wished to know more about photography.  They were set the challenge of creating their own exhibition during the workshop.

Adult Workshop: Braes Hall, November
Local photographer Cailean Maclean led a workshop for those keen to improve their photography skills.  The workshop focussed in particular on nature and the environment.  The workshop started with a short talk on photography in general, and discussed what made a good photograph.  This was followed by a short walk around the Braes area, offering an opportunity to look at the use of light, and take in the beauty of Braes.

Returning to the Hall, participants had the opportunity to be introduced to photo manipulation using software such as photoshop, as well as learning how to digitise old photographs.

Community Photography Exhibition

Braes Hall, Monday 12th - Thursday 15th November

An exhibition of photography and other memorabilia, celebrating life in Braes.

This event gave the opportunity for local people to donate photographs for an exhibition showcasing the history of Braes through the medium of photography. Its success will hopefully lead to more permanent displays in the future.
